Meow!

A tiny ball of calico fluff.

That definitely fit the tiny kitten, more than anyone originally thought it would.

After all, the small itty-bitty kitty had been born only a few months before...though it'd been a really-really long time to her. Both she and her mommy would always wander through a city, looking for food.

Not that they would find it, most of the time, but they were always looking.

Then...one night, a cold, cloudless night, her big mommy was pushing a mouse to her, big enough for only one of them to eat from, not both. The mommy kitty really needed the food, but...she gave it to the baby instead. After she had plunked the mouse down in a corner of an alleyway, the big cat collapsed to the ground and didn't move again. The tiny kitty didn't realize it then, and wouldn't for a long time, but that night was when her mommy "died".

After eating the mouse, she wasn't able to find any food for a couple of days. She had found her way into a couple of restaurants, but was chased right back out, with the owners hot on her heels...err...paws.

On the third night, the little kitty had been chased out of an Italian restaurant, with the human yelling words behind her, like "would-be thief", "call the pound" and "have you put down". She didn't understand any of it...just that nobody would feed a tiny, hungry kitty...and that nobody wanted her.

That night, she found herself wandering around a city, more hungry than she remembered ever being...and as she walked, she started thinking about being somewhere where there was lots of food and humans that would love and keep her. The kitten was lost enough in her thoughts that she didn't realize that a wind had picked up and lifted her off her paws and through the air.

The next thing she knew, she was somewhere...completely different. Behind her was sand and grass...as well as tons and tons of water! In front of her was a house and humans were inside...real humans!

Her tummy started hurting so she yowled loudly. A couple of minutes later, the door opened to reveal a young human woman, a pretty human woman. Her first words surprised the starving kitty.

"My goodness...Devon, over here!"

The kitty felt herself being picked up...and not in a mean way, but a kind manner, then stood up carefully as an older human male joined her.

"The poor thing...all skin and bones."

"Poor thing," he said, voice having a very funny sound to it. "Go ahead and bring it inside, we'll find something for it for the moment til we can get it some real cat food."

That was the night that the tiny kitty had found the humans she had wished for...and she gained her very own name, too. The man with the funny voice, called Devon, had given her the name of Artemis.
